BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team (10-14) out hit Michigan State University (14-10) and played perfect defense but saw the Spartans score in the bottom of the sixth to take the 1-0 victory.
FAU left seven on base in the game and had runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings and repeated getting a runner to second in both the fourth and fifth but failed score.
On the flip side, MSU reached second just once prior to the sixth. The Spartans lead off the sixth with a single and moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a sacrifice bunt. They then scored with a two-out single to left. FAU had one more frame to score and did see Kathryn Spack reach base with a single but her efforts were erased with a fly out and a strikeout.
Samantha Messer (2-1) started the game for FAU and pitched six complete, allowing just the one unearned run.
