Final Stats

TAMPA, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team, ranked no. 13 nationally, defeated Mississippi State 6-0 in the Lady Owls first game of the University of South Florida Speedline Tournament. The second game saw sophomore outfielder Ginny Mathews hit her second home run of the day and third of the season in FAU's 6-3 win over North Carolina.

In the first game, FAU continued with active bats. Matthews hit her second career homer in the second inning. Teammates Nikki Myers and Ninya Ybarra had doubles, Pam Mazarella was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Myers improved to 13-2 on the season and retired 13 by strikeout.

The second game versus North Carolina was more of the same. Freshman Candice Freel took to the mound to pitch a complete game and give FAU its 13th consecutive victory the most second longest in the programs history. The longest win streak was set at 18 in 2000. Freel moved to 10-1 on the season.

Offensively, Mathews was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Heather Wright was 1-for-2, Myers was 1-for2 and last weekend's hero Callie Piper was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

FAU's next tournament opponent will be Nichols State at noon, Friday, and Temple at 2 pm.
