BOCA RATON, Fla. - The second day of the LSU Softball Invitational saw Florida Atlantic University face two ranked teams. The Owls took No. 23 McNeese 4-2 and then fell to fell to host No. 10 LSU in Saturday’s featured game.

Head Coach Joan Joyce on the Owls’ Play
“We played excellent defense today,” said Joan Joyce, FAU’s head softball coach. “We made some plays that were outstanding. Not just one, but a bunch of them. That is the kind of defense that we play. We make plays on defense. Our outfield is quick. They get to the balls. Our infield covers a lot of ground. That is the strength of this team, our defense.”

Game 1 Highlights

  • Lauren Whitt had the hit of the day with a two-run blast to right field to put the Owls up 3-1
  • Madisyn Palmer was 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored
  • Emily Lochten was 3-for-4 with a RBI while Mia Olson was 2-for-3
  • Alex Miller, Samantha Lagerye, Tatum Buckley, and Jolie Duffner each added to the Owls’ 12 hit total
  • Buckley pitched the complete game to record the 4-2 victory. She added six strike outs to her season totals and moved to 7-3 on the season



Key Plays
Tatum Buckley cruised through the top half of the first inning. In the bottom half, Palmer legged out a single to third. She moved up one base via a sac bunt and stayed put on an Emily Lochten single to short. One batter later, Buckley helped her cause with a run-scoring single to left. Buckley returned to the circle to hold McNeese scoreless through three innings. The Cowgirls recorded their first hit of the game, a solo homer to left in the fourth. FAU responded in the bottom half of the fourth. Mia Olson led off the inning with a single to left. Amanda Peck served as Olson’s runner and moved to second on a sacrifice. Peck was afforded the luxury of jogging home to a celebrating team, awaiting her and Lauren Whitt, who had driven the ball over the right field wall, just left of the scoreboard. The score would remain 3-1 until the top of the six, when McNeese drew one run closer. In the bottom half of the sixth, Palmer had a one-out single. She was sac’d to second and then scored easily on a Lochten single, for FAU’s fourth and final run. Buckley returned to the circle to retire McNeese in order. She notched two more strike outs and took the 4-2 win.

Key Plays
The Owls gave up a run in the third. LSU’s base runner was allowed to stay on third after one umpire had called her out on obstruction. The call was overturned allowing her to stay at third. She later scored. The Tigers scored another in the fourth and opened the game in the sixth with four runs. FAU scored one in the 7th with two hits and two wild pitches.

The Owls are scheduled to play LSU Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. FAU will then return home to play host to the 2018 Parents’ Weekend Tournament starting Thursday, March 8.
