BOCA RATON, FL - Freshmen Carnesha Thompson and Christina Martinez had good days at the plate, but it wasn't enough as the Florida Atlantic University softball team lost to Michigan State 7-2 on Sunday.
Thompson got the Owls (6-13) off to a quick start, hitting a solo homerun down the left line in the bottom of the first to give FAU a 1-0 lead. Martinez added to the lead in the third inning when she singled up the middle, allowing Thompson to score for a second time and putting the Owls ahead 2-0.
Stephanie Call held the Spartans scoreless through five innings. MSU broke the game open in the sixth, scoring all seven of its runs in that frame. The big hit was a grand slam that drove in the final four runs of the inning.
Melissa Martinez and Call also had hits for FAU in Sunday's game. The Owls return to the field on Monday night, when they play Eastern Michigan. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
