Miami, FL - Strong pitching and a timely hitting keyed the Lady Owls victory in the championship game of the FIU "Golden Panther" Invitational. For the second day in a row the Owls defeated the seventh ranked Sooners of Oklahoma, 5-3.
The Sooners jumped out early scoring two runs in the top of the first off senior Nikki Myers. A walk, sacrifice bunt and a one out double lead to the first run. The second run was unearned.
The Lady Owls stormed back in the bottom of the third, plating three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Ninya Ybarra, Heather Wright, and Pam Mazzarella all had RBI singles to drive in the runs. FAU added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double Myers.
Oklahoma added a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 4-3 but Myers shut them down the rest of the way. Myers is now 11-2 on the season, as she went seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out eleven.
Senior centerfielder Heather Wright, pitcher Nikki Myers, and sophomore catcher Callie Piper were named to the All-Tournament Team. Piper hit here second homerun in as many days in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 5-3. Myers was also named the Tournament MVP.
The no. 20 ranked Lady Owls are now 19-3 on the season. This is the best start for the team since 1995 when the Owls started the season at 16-7. FAU will be back in action, 6 pm, Tuesday in the conference season opener versus Campbell and will then travel to Tampa, March 7-10 to play in the USF "Speedline" Invitational.
