The Florida Atlantic University softball team's bats were on fire in its 15-4 win over Quinnipiac University on the final day of the USF Under Armour Invitational. The team had a season-high 18 hits and 15 RBIs. The Owls finished the weekend 4-1, with wins over Temple, Loyola Marymount, Villanova and Quinnipiac and a loss against Mount Saint Mary's.
FAU (11-8) opened the first inning strong, scoring four runs. Whitley Herb had a single in her first at bat. She was advanced by a throwing error on the third baseman. Christina Martinez reached on a fielder's choice and she and Herb advanced on a bunt single by Lindsey Shell. Herb, Martinez and Shell scored off of a Melissa Martinez triple to left center. The final run of the inning was driven in by Shelby Knox. Quinnipiac answered right away with a grand slam in the bottom of the first to tie the game 4-4, but they wouldn't score again for the remainder of the game.
Eight more runs were scored by the Owls in the top of the second inning. Shell singled and Christina Martinez reached on a fielder's choice and both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. Melissa Martinez came up with a big double to left field to score Christina Martinez and Shell. Knox then singled to right field to bring in Melissa Martinez. Jordan Stovall walked and Carnesha Thompson hit an RBI single to right field to score Knox. The Bobcats brought in a new pitcher, but Mickey Bell hit a single through the left side to score Stovall. Spack singled up the middle to bring home Thompson and Christina Martinez doubled to left center to bring in Spack and Bell.
Bell doubled to left field in the top of the third to score Stovall and add another run for FAU. Sara Rotunno saw her first action of the tournament with a single in the top of the fourth while pinch hitting for Shell. Knox then singled and stole second and Rotunno stole third. Thompson singled to center field to score Rotunno and get her second RBI of the game. Bell got her third RBI of the game with a single to score Knox.
Pitchers Samantha Messer, who singled, and Kylee Hanson both pinch hit in the fifth inning. 11 Owls had hits in the game. Notably, Bell went 3-for-3, Shell went 2-for-2, and Thompson and Herb went 2-for-3.
Freshman Amanda Wilson was in the circle and got her fourth win of the season, bringing her record to 4-1. She went all five innings, giving up seven hits and had three strikeouts.
