BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team fell 3-2 to Harvard University in the first Saturday contest only to return to the field to drop the second game to Jacksonville University, also 3-2 but in extra innings. The Owls saw Harvard score first but used back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. FAU got the inning started with an Alexa Ballard walk. She was sacrificed to second and scored easily on a two-out double to the fence by Laura Mann. Shelby Knox then doubled in Mann for a lead that would hold until the bottom of the fifth when Harvard scored the final two runs of the game and held the Owls at bay for the victory.
FAU returned to action in the FAU Classic to see JU score in the top of the second. FAU responded in the bottom of the third with a homerun to the deepest part of the field by senior Stephanie Call. JU copied the homer in the top of the fourth to go up 2-1. Mann, who was 2-for-6 with two RBIs on Saturday, returned to the plate in the sixth to drive in Carnesha Thompson, who was 3-for-6 on the day, to tie the game. Taylor Fawbush, who relieved starter Samantha Messer in the fifth, held the Dolphins scoreless until the top of the eighth.
Playing under the international tiebreaker rules, a runner was placed on second. JU moved her to third on a sacrifice and used a two-out base hit to plate what would be the winning run.
The Owls moved to the bottom the eighth with the same opportunity but failed to advance the runner.
FAU Classic action will resume at 9 a.m. Sunday. Season and single-game tickets for remaining home games are available by contacting the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
