Becky Brandies went 2-for-3 and had the game-winning run in the Owls 1-0 win over Penn State.
March 2, 2007
The Florida Atlantic University softball team won both of its games on Day One of the Miken Classic.
FAU defeated Bethune-Cookman 8-3 in its first game of the day. Senior pitcher Tara Grady started for the Owls and went three innings to pick up her first win of the season. FAU struck in the top of the first when
Fishback would drive in another run in the bottom of the second and the Owls would add two more runs in the third to gain a 4-2 advantage. FAU scored twice in the top of both the sixth and seventh innings, and the Wildcats would score once in the sixth to provide the final margin of victory.
The final game of the day would find the Owls locked in yet another defensive struggle against Penn State as both teams were shutout and combined for only four hits through six and a half innings. Becky Brandies led off the bottom of the seventh with her second triple of the season. Amy Bukovich drew a walk that brought Blair Bodenmiller to the plate. Bodenmiller would single up the middle to drive in Brandies and give the Owls a 1-0 victory.
The win marked the third time in four games that FAU has won it its last at-bat. The victory improved the Owls' record to 11-6. Jen Musillo struck out 10 for her third win of the season. FAU is the only undefeated team headed into the second day of the tournament.
