BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University swept a doubleheader with St. John's University Tuesday in Boca Raton, FL. Jenn Piazza had a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh of game one to give FAU a 5-4 victory. In game two, Piazza singled in the tying run with two outs in the seventh and drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth. Piazza went a combined 4-for-9 with four RBIs as the Owls improved to 17-9.
In game one, Jo Sherlock drove in a run on a double in the third to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead. The Owls came right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs. With one out, Jessica Sachs tripled to drive in Christina Thompson with tying run. The next batter, Jenna Lopez, reached on a squeeze bunt to drive in Sachs and make it 2-1 FAU.
St. John's (4-6) scored twice in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead before FAU scored a run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Lopez doubled to drive in Thompson to make it 3-3.
The Red Storm took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on RBI-single by Jessica Marical. SJU held that lead into the bottom of the seventh.
In the final frame, the Owls put runners on second and third with two outs. Jenn Piazza then doubled to left center to score both Lopez and Sachs with the game-winning runs.
Amanda Morin (9-3) picked up the win. She allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, St. John's took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out single by Carrie Kester. The Red Storm then held FAU scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.
Amy Bellisari led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. A ground-out advanced Bellisari to third, and Pam Mazzarella walked to put runners on first and third with two outs. Piazza followed with a single up the middle on a 2-2 count to drive in Bellisari and make it 1-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bellisari led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Mazzarella singled to put runners on first and third with two outs. Piazza stepped up and lined 3-2 pitch into right field to give FAU a 2-1 win.
Ashley Greene (2-0) picked up the win. The freshman allowed one run on seven hits.
Florida Atlantic next hosts the FAU "Worth" Invitational March 6-7. Florida International, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Notre Dame help make up the five team field. FAU faces UMass and North Carolina March 6 starting at 5:00pm.
