The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its two games on the second day of the USF Under Armour Invitational. The Owls had a 3-0 victory against Villanova in the first game of the day and dropped the second game 1-0 to Mount St. Mary's in extra innings.
In its first game of the day, FAU (10-8) scored all three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kathryn Spack started off the inning with a single through the right side and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Whitley Herb. Lindsey Shell singled to left field to score Spack for the first run. Melissa Martinez and Shelby Knox both walked to load the bases. Jordan Stovall drove in Shell and Melissa Martinez for the final two runs. Spack went 3-for-3 in the game and Mickey Bell went 1-for-2 with a single through the right side in the bottom of the fourth.
Junior Samantha Messer pitched a solid game, getting her fourth win and bringing her record to 4-2 on the year. She went all seven innings, giving up six hits and had six strikeouts.
It was a pitchers' duel in the second game of the night against Mount St. Mary's. Kylee Hanson pitched eight innings and had a career high 12 strikeouts, six of those looking. Hanson is now 3-4 on the season. FAU's only hit came from Shell in the top of the fourth inning. An RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Mount St. Mary's the victory.
