Softball Concludes Weekend with Split

COLUMBUS, GA - Florida Atlantic University (15-9) split its games on the final day of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, GA. The Owls, playing in the Bronze Bracket, defeated Northwestern State University, 3-2, before falling to no. 18 Arizona State University, 2-0, in the bracket championship game.

Against NSU (10-8), Jessica Braggins led off the second inning with a home run to left field to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Demons tied the score on a two-out RBI-single by Amanda Glenn.

In the top of the fifth, Callie Piper reached on a one-out error and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Jessica Sachs then hit an opposite field two-run homer to right field to put the Owls on top 3-1. NSU scored once in the sixth to account for the game's final run.

Amanda Morin (8-3) picked up the win. She allowed one run on four hits in four innings of work. Ashley Greene came on in relief before Candice Freel came on in the bottom of the seventh and needed just one pitch to retire the final batter for her first save of the year.

In the ASU game, the Wildcats (18-9) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single by Phelan Wright. In the fifth, ASU had three straight singles with two outs, capped off by an RBI-single by Valerie Sevilla, to take a 2-0 lead.

Braggins, Sachs, Pam Mazzarella, Jenn Piazza, and Ginny Matthews all collected two hits on the day.

Florida Atlantic next hosts St. John's in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm.
