COLUMBUS, GA - Jenn Piazza hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to lift Florida Atlantic University past Massachusetts, 4-1, Saturday night in Columbus, GA. The game was the second of the day for the Owls as they continued play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Piazza drove in all four runs in the victory. Earlier in the day, FAU (14-8) was defeated by Ohio State, 4-3.
Against UMass (2-7), FAU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jessica Sachs led off with a walk and advanced to third when Lauren Evans doubled. Sachs later scored on a groundout by Piazza. The Minutewomen tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run.
In the sixth, Evans and Pam Mazzarella singled with one out, and Piazza followed with her third homer of the year to make it 4-1 FAU.
Amanda Morin (7-3) picked up the complete-game victory. The sophomore allowed just two hits while striking out four. She also took a perfect game into the fourth inning.
Against Ohio State (4-4), the Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sachs scored on a throwing error after stealing third base. OSU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a pair of home runs.
Both teams scored runs in the fifth as the game went to the seventh with OSU up 3-2. Mazzarella doubled to score Evans and make it 3-3. In the bottom of the inning, Megan Schwab singled home the winning run with one out.
Florida Atlantic next faces Northwestern State Sunday at 11:00am. If the Owls win, they will play in the championship of the Bronze Bracket at 1:00pm.
