BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team hosted the second day of their Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday and finished the evening competing against University of North Florida and Providence College. The Owls recorded a loss against the UNF Ospreys (5-0) and a win against the Providence Friers (2-1).
Stephanie Call led Florida Atlantic in their first game of the evening against UNF. In the bottom of the fifth, Samantha Messer entered the game pitching for Call as UNF took a 5-0 lead. In the end, the Owls could not score against the Ospreys' defense.
Florida Atlantic finished the night taking on the Providence Friers, with pitcher Taylor Fawbush leading the team to victory. The Owls took an early lead at the bottom of the first with Alexa Ballard earning an RBI hitting a single and allowing Christina Martinez to score. During the following four innings, both teams' strong defense kept each other from putting runs on the scoreboard.
With a 1-0 lead at the top of the sixth, Providence's third baseman hit a triple that allowed the team to score and bring the game to a tie. The Owls retaliated when Ballard earned her second RBI of the game, and the team's second run, bringing Call home. Florida Atlantic finished the game with a 5-8 record for the season.
The Strike Out Cancer Tournament will come to a finish tomorrow afternoon as the Owls play the Northern Illinois Huskies at 1 p.m. at FAU.
