Boca Raton, FL - FAU Lady Owls win the FAU Worth Invitational with a 3-0 win over Florida International in the championship game.
Freshman pitcher Candice Freel (6-1) pitched a seven inning complete game shutout for her sixth win of the season. FAU jumped out early scoring all three runs in the bottom of the first. Senior leftfielder Ninya Ybarra led off the inning with her third homerun of the season and second of the tournament to stake the Lady Owls to an early 1-0 lead. Senior's Heather Wright and Nikki Myers followed with base hits and freshman Pam Mazzarella walked to load the bases. Sophomore Amy Bellisari followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Junior Michelle Shirah capped off the inning with another RBI single to make it 3-0.
That was all of the scoring FAU would need to win the tournament and run their overall record to 14-4 on the season. FIU would fall to 12-10, despite being a perfect 4-0 heading into the championship game.
Earlier in the day FAU beat Southern Illinois 1-0 to advance to the championship game. Senior pitcher Nikki Myers threw a perfect game, striking out 13 batters to run her season mark to 8-2.
FAU freshman pitcher Candice Freel was named the tournament's Most Valuable Pitcher and FIU sophomore third baseman/first baseman Jennifer Owens was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player.
The Lady Owls will travel to Miami for the FIU "Golden Panther" Invitational, March 1-3. FAU will play Connecticut(11am) and Wichita State (1pm) on Friday, Auburn (11am) and Oklahoma (1pm) on Saturday, and the Championship round on Sunday.
