BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team's annual Strike Out Cancer Tournament began this evening as they took on Towson University and the University of Connecticut. The Owls recorded a victory against Towson (13-0) and a loss against UConn (3-2).
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Messer kept Towson from scoring as the Owls run-ruled Towson after five-innings of play. The team had a strong start, earning three runs in the top of the first. Alexa Ballard and Jordan Stovall both earned two RBIs during the top of the third and the team earned five runs and four hits overall during the inning, bringing the score to 8-0. Still keeping Towson off the scoreboard, the Owls earned three more runs during the fourth and a final two at the top of the fifth. Stephanie Call and Jordan Stovall earned the most runs for the game, batting in three each.
Florida Atlantic played the UConn Huskies in the final game of the night with Taylor Fawbush as starting pitcher. With a slow start to the game, the Owls and Huskies managed to keep each other from obtaining a strong lead. At the bottom of the seventh, Florida Atlantic was tied with UConn 1-1. In the end, the Huskies took a 3-2 win after eight innings.
The Strike Out Cancer Tournament will resume play tomorrow at 9 a.m. Florida Atlantic University will once again play the final two games of the night against the University of North Florida at 6 p.m. and Providence at 8 p.m.
