BOCA RATON - The Florida Atlantic University softball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Hofstra on Wednesday night, improving to 6-13 with the two victories. The Owls won the first game 6-5 and the nightcap 12-0 in five innings. Sophomore Jenna Lopez was 4-for-6 with two RBI and senior Jessica Braggins went 4-for-7 with three RBI on the night. Sophomore Ashley Greene also threw a one-hit shutout in the second game.
In the first game of the evening, the Owls found themselves down 5-0 in the middle of the fifth, but scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to give themselves the only lead they would need in the 6-5 victory.
Hofstra (1-6) opened things with three runs in the first off FAU starter Candice Freel, but the senior right-hander soon settled down, striking out eight of the next nine Pride batters.
The lead increased to 5-0 in the top of the fifth when Hailey Clark smacked a two-run double to right-center, but the Owls hit back in a big way in the bottom of the inning.
Freel doubled to lead off and her pinch-runner, Marlene Lopez, scored on a wild pitch two batters later. Back-to-back singles by Jenna Lopez and Jessica Sachs were followed by a two-run double from Danielle Arriaga, making the score 5-3. Jessica Braggins then tied things up with a two-run double of her own to deep center field before scoring the tie-breaking run on a passed ball.
Hofstra put two on with no outs to open the sixth, but Freel struck out the next two batters and got out of the jam by forcing pinch-hitter Courtney Oliver to ground out. Freel finished with 12 strikeouts on the night and evened her record at 4-4 with the win.
Game two was never in doubt for the Owls as they scored seven times in the first two innings off Pride starter Callie Osborne. FAU starter Ashley Greene pitched a gem, allowing only one hit while striking out seven in her five innings of work, while senior Jen Piazza and Jenna Lopez were both 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
FAU will head to Columbus, Georgia tomorrow for the NFCA Leadoff Classic which begins Friday. The Owls will take on Creighton plus ranked teams Alabama and Oregon in initial round-robin play. Live stats from all games will be available from Columbus on www.fausports.com and www.nfca.org.
