BOCA RATON, FL - Amanda Morin and Candice Freel each threw complete-game shutouts as Florida Atlantic University swept Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader Monday night in Boca Raton. The Lady Owls defeated the Eagles, 2-0, in game one before winning game two, 3-0. The wins improve FAU to 12-5 on the year.
In the first game, Jenn Piazza singled home Jenna Lopez with one out to give FAU a 1-0 lead. With one out in the fifth, Pam Mazzarella had an RBI-double to score Jessica Sachs with the game's other run.
Morin, meanwhile, dominated Eagles' hitters from the outset. She allowed just three hits and struck out 10 with no walks. She struck out four of the last five hitters she faced, including the side in the seventh. The sophomore improved to 5-1 on the year.
Game two was scoreless until the fourth when FAU scored two runs. Mazzarella led off with a walk and, with one out, Freel doubled to give the Lady Owls a 1-0 lead. Freel came home to score on a passed ball to make it 2-0. In the sixth, Jennifer Cavanaugh had a run-scoring triple to account for the game's final run.
Freel allowed three hits while striking out nine. It was her fourth shutout of the season as she improved to 6-4 on the year.
Florida Atlantic next faces Michigan in a doubleheader Wednesday at 6:00pm in Boca Raton.
