FAU Softball Falls in Championship Game BOCA RATON, FL - Michigan scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Florida Atlantic University, 4-3, Sunday in the championship game of the

FAU "Worth" Invitational in Boca Raton. FAU (10-5) opened the scoring in the third when Pam Mazzarella singled with two outs to score Michelle Ryan and make it 1-0. In the fifth, Mazzarella had a two-run single with one out to score Jessica Sachs and Callie Piper. That gave FAU a 3-0 lead it would hold until the bottom of the sixth.

In that frame, Meghan Doe had an RBI single after a lead-off double by Tiffany Haas. The Wolverines would three more runs, all unearned, due to two infield errors.

FAU tried to rally in the seventh when Candice Freel and Jenn Piazza had two-out singles, but Michigan (8-2) shut the door to hang on for the win.

Freel (5-4) allowed just six hits and one earned run in six innings of work. She struck out three and did not allow a walk. Mazzarella finished 2-for-4 and drove in all three FAU runs.

Earlier in the day, Rutgers defeated Long Island, 4-2, before outlasting Eastern Michigan 8-6 in 11 innings.

Florida Atlantic next hosts Eastern Michigan Monday night in a double-header at 6:00pm at FAU Field.
