Boca Raton, FL - FAU women's softball team open the FAU Worth Invitational with a split, beating Georgia Tech, 1-0, and dropping a tough 2-1 decision in the nightcap to FIU.
The Lady Owls defeated Georgia Tech, 1-0 in their first game of the day. Senior leftfielder Ninya Ybarra hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning for the games only run. Freshman pitcher Candice Freel picked up her fourth win (4-1) of the season pitching seven innings of shutout ball, giving up four hits while striking out three. Georgia Tech freshman pitcher Jessica Sallinger went six strong innings setting a school record with 13 strikeouts in the game. Sallinger is now 4-1.
In the nightcap, FIU scored two runs in the bottom of third then held on to win 2-1. FAU senior pitcher Nikki Myers (6-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out eight. FIU freshman pitcher Amanda Nealer picked up the win going all seven innings.
Play resumes Saturday, with games being played at 9am, Georgia Tech vs SIU, 11am, Georgia Tech vs FIU, 1pm, Rutgers vs FIU and FAU playing SIU at 3pm and Rutgers at 5pm. The first round of the championship will be at 7pm.
