The Florida Atlantic University softball team brought home a 3-2 victory against Penn State on Friday night in an eighth inning comeback to wrap up day one of the FAU Invitational.
Penn State struck first, putting up their two runs in the bottom of the third inning. FAU answered in the top of the fourth with singles from Whitley Herb, Melissa Martinez and Delaney Rickey. Herb scored off of a Knox sacrifice fly to center field.
Carnesha Thompson started off the seventh inning with a hard-hit single and advanced to third on an error by the Penn State right fielder. Mickey Bell drove Thompson in with a single up the middle to take the game into extra innings. Thompson went 2-for-4 in the game and Lindsay Shell also contributed going 2-for-3.
Melissa Martinez went 1-for-3 and scored the winning run. She was put on second in the eighth inning, advanced to third on a Shelby Knox sacrifice bunt and went on to score off of a Jordan Stovall sacrifice fly to right field.
The Owls started the first game of the night off strong but couldn't close the gap in their 7-1 loss to Kentucky. The Owls started the first inning with a Whitley Herb single. Herb advanced to second on a Christina Martinez sacrifice bunt and scored off a Jordan Stovall single.
Amanda Wilson got her first loss of the season, which brings her record to 2-1 on the year. She pitched six innings, allowed eight hits, five earned runs and had two strikeouts. Pitcher Samantha Messer took over in the seventh giving up one hit, one earned run and had one strikeout.
The Owls play two games Saturday at FAU Softball Stadium.
