BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University picked up a pair of victories Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship game at the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton. The Lady Owls defeated Long Island, 4-2, before taking down Rutgers, 2-1. The wins improve FAU to 10-4 on the year and set up Sunday's championship game featuring FAU and Michigan at 1:00pm.
FAU scored four runs in the top of the first against Long Island. Jenn Piazza started the scoring on an RBI-single to put FAU up 1-0. The next two runs came across on wild pitches before Jennifer Cavanaugh had a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Owls a 4-0 lead.
LIU (0-4) came back with two runs in the second before the Lady Owls held on the rest of the way. Freshman Ashley Greene picked up her first collegiate victory. She pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. She walked two and struck out one. Amanda Morin came on in the fifth and secured the save.
Piazza and Jessica Sachs each had two hits against LIU as FAU finished with eight hits for the game. LIU managed just five hits.
Against Rutgers (1-3), Ginny Matthews gave FAU a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run single with one out. That was all the scoring FAU would need as Morin picked up the win and improved to 4-1 on the year. The sophomore allowed one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Other results on Saturday included Michigan winning against both Eastern Michigan (5-0) and LIU (8-0). EMU also defeated Rutgers 3-1.
Sunday's schedule includes Long Island vs Rutgers at 9:00am. At 11:00am, Eastern Michigan will face the winner of the 9:00am game before FAU and Michigan take part in the championship.
