BOCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University began play at the FAU "Worth" Invitational Friday in Boca Raton, FL. The Lady Owls first took on Rutgers and lost 3-1. FAU was later defeated by no. 1 UCLA, 7-0. FAU (7-8) is among six teams taking part in the three-day tournament.
In the fifth, Rutgers scored a run to tie it at 1-1 and then scored two more in the sixth on a single by Jenny Card and a triple by Nikki Childress.
FAU tried to rally in the top of the seventh but stranded runners at the corners.
Amanda Morin (4-4) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out six and walked one. Brielle Cosentino (1-1) picked up the win in relief.
Following the Rutgers game, FAU faced top-ranked UCLA (12-1), and the Bruins stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Natasha Watley led off with a homer to right field and, two batters later, Claire Sua launched a two-run homer to left center to make it 3-0. Watley added a run-scoring single in the second to make it 4-0. UCLA added three more runs in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
Candice Freel (3-2) suffered the loss for the Lady Owls. She allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits. Keira Goerl (9-1) picked up the win for the Bruins, allowing just one hit and striking out nine in the shutout.
Florida Atlantic next faces Wisconsin Saturday morning at 11:00am before taking on Long Island at 7:00pm.
