BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University split its two games on Friday's first round action at the FAU Invitational. The Lady Owls are hosting Eastern Michigan, Long Island, Michigan, and Rutgers. FAU defeated EMU, 5-2, in its home opener before falling to Michigan, 3-1. FAU is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 polls and moves to 8-4 on the year.
Against Eastern Michigan, FAU scored three runs in the first inning. Jessica Sachs and Callie Piper each reached via errors. Sachs scored the first run on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Jessica Braggins doubled to drive in two runs giving FAU a 3-0 lead.
In the second inning, Pam Mazzarella had a one-out double that drove in Sachs to give the Lady Owls a 4-0 lead. EMU scored two unearned runs in the third before FAU added a final run in the seventh on a double by Candice Freel. Amanda Morin (3-1) picked up the victory. She allowed three hits, no walks, and struck out seven. Mazzarella went 4-for-4 as FAU banged out nine hits.
Against #9/#11 Michigan, Jenna Lopez led off the first with a walk and came around to score on an error to put FAU up 1-0. Michigan came back with a run in the second and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. The Wolverines added a final run in the sixth and held on for the two-run victory.
Mazzarella had two hits against Michigan and finished 6-for-7 on the day. She leads FAU with a .487 batting average.
In other action on Friday, Rutgers defeated Long Island 8-0 in six innings, Michigan defeated Rutgers 2-1, and EMU defeated Long Island 6-2.
