Final Stats

MIAMI, FL - Nikki Myers tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 13 as Florida Atlantic University defeated Florida International, 2-0, Wednesday in Miami. FAU, which is ranked 21st in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, improved to 9-2 on the year while FIU fell to 8-9.

The Lady Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ninya Ybarra led off with a walk and later scored on a fielder's choice. FAU scored the only other run of the game in the fifth when Pam Mazzarella hit a run-scoring single with two outs that scored Myers. Mazarella had both RBIs for the Lady Owls.

That was all the offense FAU would need as Myers (5-1) overpowered Golden Panther bats. She allowed just three base runners all night and none advanced past first base. The shutout was the third of the season for Myers and fourth for FAU.

Earlier in the day, FAU moved into the top-25 for the first time this season. FAU, the highest ranked team in the Atlantic Sun Conference, had been receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 preseason poll. FAU's two losses have both come to no. 6 Washington while the Lady Owls already have a win at no. 17 Florida State.

Florida Atlantic next faces Georgia Tech in their home opener Friday afternoon at 5:00pm in Boca Raton. The game will be part of first round action at the annual FAU "Worth" Invitational that runs Friday through Sunday at FAU.
