BOCA RATON, FL - A four run outburst in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Florida Atlantic University softball team lost to LIU Brooklyn 7-4 on Sunday in the finale of the FAU Kick-Off Classic.
The Owls (3-8) drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning when Carnesha Thompson singled to center, allowing Laura Mann to score. The Blackbirds responded with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
FAU tied the game at the in the bottom of the third inning, one run scoring on Melissa Martinez's RBI double and the other on an Alison Milam groundout. The score remained tied until the top of the eighth inning, when the international tiebreaker came into play. The leadoff batter doubled in the go ahead run, snapping Paige Pender's string of 11 consecutive retired batters.
LIU-Brooklyn scored two more runs on two hits and an error to chase Pender from the game. Samantha Messer entered in relief and surrendered another run before getting out of the inning. Mann's sacrifice fly provided the only run of the inning for FAU, before the Owls were retired.
Tournament season for the Owls continues on Friday when they host their 7th annual Strike Out Cancer tournament. The event will also be used to raise funds for breast cancer awareness.
