MIAMI, FL - Candice Freel threw a two-hit shutout to lead Florida Atlantic University past Florida International University, 3-0, Tuesday night in Miami, FL. FAU (7-3) scored all of its runs in the seventh as Freel dominated the Golden Panthers from start to finish. She struck out a season-high 11 batters and allowed just two walks on her way to her third shutout of the year.
The game was scoreless heading to the seventh when Jenn Piazza led off with a solo homer to left field to put FAU in front 1-0. The home run was Piazza's second of the season. With two outs, Ginny Matthews doubled to score Lauren Evans and make it 2-0. Matthews came around to score FAU's third run on an outfield error.
FIU (2-7) put together the first threat of the night in the bottom of the second. Marleah Stapf led off with a walk and advanced to third when Lindsay Tippings followed with a double. Freel then did a masterful job getting out of trouble. She struck out Brittany Witherow for the first out. Tabitha Embry attempted a squeeze, but Pam Mazzarella threw out Stapf at home for the second out. Freel then retired Jessica Hernandez on a ground out to end the inning unscathed.
In the fourth, Stapf reached on a one-out single, but Freel struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
Freel retired the last 11 batters she faced and 15 of the final 16. She lowered her team-leading ERA to 0.98 and improved to 5-2.
Florida Atlantic next takes part in the FAU Invitational Friday through Sunday at FAU Field.
