BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team picked up two victories Saturday night with a 4-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn and matched the same score in the nightcap with a 4-0 win over Maryland University in the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
The Owls improved to 5-4 on the season with a strong pitching and offensive performances. Amanda Wilsontoss seven shutout innings of three-hit ball and retire three by strikeouts to earn the LIU victory.
Whitney Herb led-off the third with a single to first. Christina Martinez followed with a bunt single. With one out and runners on first and third FAU shortstop Shelby Knox put the ball in play driving in the first run of the game and reaching first on an LIU-Brooklyn error. Jordan Stovall then hit a single up the middle to score Melissa Martinez, who had reached earlier on a fielder's choice, to put the Owls up 2-0 heading into the bottom half of the third.
Melissa Martinezdrove in Herb in the fourth for the third run of the game. Herb, who was 4-for-4 in the game, scored her third run of the game after reaching on an infield single. She was plated by a Christina Martinez triple for the game's 4-0 final.
The hot hitting Herb was 2-for-3 in the second game but it was first baseman Laura Mann who broke the game open with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second that would prove to be the only runs that the Owls would need. Herb had a two-out RBI single to add a third run in the third. Melissa Martinez doubled in the fifth and was driven in by Jordan Stovallfor the game's fourth and final run of the game.
The Owls will pick-up with more action at 11 a.m., Sunday. The Owls will host South Carolina at 11 a.m. and will host the final game of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament featuring LIU-Brooklyn and Maryland. Live stats will be available at fausports.com.
