CLERMONT, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team only managed four hits in a 7-1 loss to UT-Chattanooga, capping off a winless opening weekend at the NTC Elite Invitational.
The first two Owls' hits did give them an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, freshman Sarah Howell reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a two-out groundout. She was plated on a clean single to centerfield off the bat of Stephanie Call.
The lead stayed at 1-0 until the floodgates opened for UTC in the 5th. Layne Rainey led off the inning with a triple to the fence in right-center field. After an error and a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Michelle Fuzzard hit a grounder to the right side that scored two runs, and the Mocs would go on to add three more runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Owls were only able to manage two more hits: a leadoff double by Call in the 6th, and she was stranded on second base; and a leadoff single in the 7th by Kimberly Diaz, who was erased on a double play.
Starting pitcher Taylor Fawbush (0-1) went the distance in the loss. She gave up 10 hits and only five of the seven runs she gave up were earned. The junior struck out six Mocs in the game.
Next weekend will be the first home games of the 2012 season for the 0-5 Owls, as they host the FAU Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton. They will open up on Friday, February 17, with their first two of five scheduled games over the three-day showcase, at 6 p.m. against Kentucky, and at 8 p.m. against Wright State.
