Ballard Belted the Deciding Run
Feb. 10, 2013
TAMPA, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team (1-4) dropped the day's first game to Marshall University 2-1 in eight innings. But the nightcap would be a different story with a 2-1 victory over the tournament host and No. 10 team nationally USF.
In the first game, second inning doubles by Marshall put the first runs on the scoreboard. The Owls tied the game in top of the fifth by playing small ball. Taylor Fawbush, who started the game in the circle, drove in the tying run in the top of the fifth. The score would hold until the bottom of the eighth, when playing with the international tie breaker, Marshall used flies to the outfield to score the deciding run.
The second game of the day saw FAU use speed to capitalize on USF miscues to score a run in the first. Christina Martinez, who was 2-for-3 in the game, scored the game's lone run through six innings. With one out in the top of the seventh, third baseman Alexia Ballard belted one over the left field wall for what proved to be a much needed second run.
With the Owls up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Samantha Messer returned to the mound to close out the game versus the heart of the Bulls' line-up, but not without drama. USF lead off the inning with a single and scored on the following batter's double. Messer struck out the third batter of the inning. Two deep flies would end the game and secure the FAU 2 -1 victory.
Messer picked up the complete game victory. She allowed one run and recorded four strikeouts. FAU will return home next weekend to host the FAU Kick-Off Classic. To follow the games log onto www.fausports.com or follow the. team via twitter @FAUOwlAthletics or Facebook @fauowlathletics.
