Tallahassee, Fl - Tallahassee, Fl Florida Atlantic women's softball team finishes second at FSU Seminole Challenge with a 4-0 win against the University of Louisville.
Freshman pitcher Candice Freel picked up her third win of the season going seven innings, giving up 6 hits and striking out four.
The Lady Owls would score all four runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore center-fielder Ginny Matthews would lead off with a walk and move to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Christina Thompson. Senior catcher Heather Wright would plate Matthews with a triple to rightfield. Senior Nicole Myers would then double in Wright to make the score 2-0. Freshman first baseman Pam Mazzarella would then hit her first collegiate home-run to make the score 4-0.
With the win, FAU finished 3-1 in the tournament good for second place.
The Lady Owls would then play a non-conference game against tournament winner No. 9 Washington. The Huskies went 4-0 in the tournament beating FAU on Friday 2-1 in 10 innings.
The second game of the day proved to be a pitchers' dual early as Lady Owl All-American Nicole Myers struck out the first seven Husky batters. UW pitcher Ashley Boek did her part in keeping the Owls off the scoreboard allowing just two base runners through the first four innings.
Washington finally broke through in the fifth inning as Kristen Rivera blasted a home run for the team's first hit and run of the game. The Huskies' 1-0 lead lasted only a short time as a single by FAU freshman third baseman Jennifer Piazza turned into a run, as the ball got behind UW rightfielder and rolled to the fence to tie the score at 1-1.
UW bounced right back in its next at-bat in the top of the sixth with two singles and a double to drive in the two runs.
Senior Nicole Myers (5-1) went the distance for the Lady Owls striking out a season high 14 batters in her first loss of the season. Myers did reach a milestone in the game with her 1000 career strikeout.
The Lady Owls are now 8-2 on the season and return home to host the FAU "Worth" Invitational, February 22-24.
