BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its two games on the second day of the FAU Kick-Off Classic. The Owls lost to St. John's 3-2 in their first game of the day before nipping Tulsa 1-0 in the nightcap.
Laura Mann drove in FAU's first run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. Melissa Martinez added to the lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI single that drove in Lindsey Shell. The Owls (2-2) were one strike away from the win in the bottom of the inning, but a Red Storm homerun gave St. John's the victory.
Game two was a pitchers' duel between FAU's Amanda Wilson and Tulsa's Caitlin Sill. Neither team managed a hit through the first five innings. Both teams threatened to score in the sixth, but Lindsey Shell cut down a runner at the plate and Tulsa got out of a bases loaded, one out jam to keep the game deadlocked.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the international tiebreaker came into effect in the eighth. Tulsa was unable to drive across a run in the top of the inning. In the home half of the frame, Shell moved Sarah Howell over to third on a base hit before Christina Martinez's single to left gave the Owls the win.
Amanda Wilson pitched a complete game shutout for her first career win. The Owls wrap up the Kick-Off Classic on Sunday against Ohio State at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at fausports.com.
