MIAMI, FL -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Florida International University, 4-0, in the championship game of the FIU Invitational in Miami, FL. FAU (4-6) fell victim to three unearned runs as its two-game winning streak was snapped.
The game was scoreless into the fifth inning when FIU scored three runs. Jennifer Powell led off the inning with a single. Yarah Otero pinch-ran for Powell and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Pinch-hitter Marleah Staph followed with a single to score Otero and put FIU in front 1-0. After a hit batter, double-steal and a ground-out back to the pitcher, Cynthia Turek reached on an error that allowed two more runs to score and put the Golden Panthers up 3-0.
FIU added another unearned run in the sixth on a single by Lindsay Tippings.
FAU outhit FIU 7-6 but committed three errors. Jennifer Cavanaugh's third inning double was the only extra base hit for the Lady Owls.
Amanda Morin (3-3) suffered the loss. She allowed just one earned run in seven innings and walked one while striking out four. One day after retiring the first 12 batters she faced against FIU, Morin went eight deep to start the game on Sunday before FIU's first hit.
Amanda Nealer (4-1) picked up the win, allowing just four hits in five innings while striking out six.
In its next game, Florida Atlantic will once again take on FIU, Tuesday night, at 6:00pm in Miami.
