Florida Atlantic's softball team opened the 2013 season splitting their two games at the FAU Kick-Off Classic on Friday night.
The Owls picked up a big 3-0 win over No.18/19 Louisville in their second game of the night. The first run came in the second inning when Whitley Herb hit a single through the left side to score Shelby Knox, who hit a triple earlier that inning. A Christina Martinez triple in the bottom of the fourth inning scored the other two runs.
Samantha Messer went the distance in the circle, giving up eight hits and had four strikeouts. Messer's record moves to 1-0 on the year.
The Owls fell 3-2 to Northern Illinois in the first game of the night. Northern Illinois took the early lead off a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Shelby Knox drove in FAU's first run with a triple to the center field wall. Kathryn Spack's RBI single drove in FAU's second run. Christina Martinez also had a base hit in the third inning.
Kylee Hanson threw a complete game for FAU. She fell to 0-1 on the year, despite giving up just five hits and had three strikeouts.
The FAU Kick-Off Classic continues on Saturday, Feb. 8, where the Owls will face St. John's University at 6 p.m. and Tulsa at 8 p.m. Live stats for all games will be available via GameTracker at www.fausports.com and tickets can be purchased at the FAU Ticket Office by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
