BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's softball team opened the 2013 season with a 7-1 loss to Samford University, at the USF Wilson DeMarini Tournament.

The game saw just four hits, two for each team through five and a half innings. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Samford recorded seven runs on five hits. The Owls returned to the plate to score. First baseman Stephanie Call was hit by a pitch as the lead-off batter in the seventh. Junior Whitley Herb entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to second on a ground out. She then scored on a double by third baseman Alexa Ballard. Two of FAU's three hits were by freshmen and sisters Christina and Melissa Martinez.

Senior Taylor Fawbush started in the circle for FAU and went the distance. Fawbush fell to 0-1 on the year. Fawbush gave up eleven hits and all runs were earned.

FAU will return to the field Saturday morning for two games.
