MIAMI, FL - Florida Atlantic University (6-2) split its games on the second day of action at the FIU DeLong Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Owls defeated no. 16 Oregon, 3-0, before falling to no. 7 Georgia, 3-0.
Against Oregon, Candice Freel followed up her no-hitter on Friday with a three-hit shutout. The junior improved to 4-1 and struck out six with one walk while scattering three singles.
FAU scored all of its runs in the top of the third. Jessica Sachs doubled with one out to score Jennifer Cavanaugh with the first run. Ginny Matthews followed with an RBI-single and Jessica Braggins later walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.
In the second game, Georgia scored once in the second and twice in the third to account for the game's only scoring. All runs were unearned as Amanda Morin (2-1) suffered her first loss in 18 decisions. She allowed four hits in six innings of work and walked two with two strikeouts.
FAU had a total of eight hits on the day. Pam Mazzarella went 3-for-7 while Sachs and Cavanaugh collected two hits each. Mazzarella raised her team-leading batting average to .407.
Florida Atlantic takes on Georgia Sunday at 11:30am for the tournament championship.
