MIAMI, FL - Candice Freel threw a no-hitter and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as Florida Atlantic University defeated Iowa State, 5-0, Friday in Miami. Freel (3-1) struck out nine and walked one as she picked up her second career no-hitter. The game was scoreless until the Lady Owls scored a run in the fifth, and two in the sixth and seventh to pull away. FAU banged out 11 hits with four players picking up two or more hits. The game was part of opening day action at the FIU Invitational.
Freel struck out the first five batters she faced and had a perfect game until she walked Misty Kimura with one out in the fifth. The only other runner who reached was Kelly Wardein in the sixth when she led off as a pinch-hitter and was hit by a pitch. Freel retired the last six batters she faced including two strikeouts to end the game.
At the plate, Jessica Sachs singled with one out in the fifth to score Jennifer Cavanaugh and put FAU on top 1-0. In the sixth, Jenn Piazza led off with a double and came around to score when Freel followed with a double. Later in the inning, Lauren Evans scored on a groundout by Cavanaugh. FAU tacked on two more runs in the seventh on an RBI-single by Freel and later on a fielding error.
