TAMPA, FL -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Northwestern University, 5-3, Saturday night as the team continued competition at the USF "Louisville Slugger" Tournament.
NU (3-1) responded with one run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1 and then took a 3-1 lead in the third on a two-run homer by Robyn Pettinger. Pettinger hit yet another two-run shot in the fifth to give the Wildcats a 5-1 lead.
FAU tried to rally in the seventh as Jessica Sachs led off with a walk. One out later, Pam Mazzarella doubled, scoring Sachs and making it 5-2. Callie Piper followed with an RBI-double to cut it to 5-3, but that was as close as the Lady Owls would get.
Mazzarella (0-2) took the loss for FAU. The sophomore went the distance, allowing five runs on 10 hits. She walked four and struck out two.
Piper extended her hitting streak to four games to start the season. The junior leads FAU with a .455 batting average.
Florida Atlantic concludes the tournament Sunday with a match-up against host South Florida at 1:00pm.
