Tampa, FL - The Florida Atlantic Women's Softball team opened the 2002 campaign with a 9-8 win over Northwestern University at the University of South Florida "Louisville Slugger" Tournament.
Freshman Candice Freel pitched five and two-thirds innings for her first collegiate win. Freel gave up eight runs on ten hits, while striking out three. Senior Nicole Myers came in to pitch the final inning and a third to record her fist save of the season. Myers gave up one hit while striking out two and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Offensively, sophomore right fielder Ginny Matthews led the Lady Owls with a two-run homer in the top of the second when the Owls scored six runs on eight hits. Senior center fielder Heather Wright went 3-for-4, with a double, a stolen base, two runs scored and one run batted in.
Northwestern opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first. FAU answered with the six runs in the top of the second, added two in the top of the third and one in the top of the fifth to make it nine to three.
Freshman first baseman, Pam Mazzarella went 2-for5, with a double, a run scored and one RBI. Sophomore catch Callie Piper also went 2-for5, with a double, a run scored and one RBI to help the Lady Owls at the plate.
Northwestern added five runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-8 before Myers came in and shut the door.
FAU's second game of the day was against the University of Tennessee. FAU will play host South Florida on Saturday at 2pm and then start the Championship round at 3:30pm.
