TAMPA, FL -- Florida Atlantic University, ranked no. 26 in the nation, was defeated by Auburn University, 5-3, Friday night in Tampa in the first day of action at the USF "Louisville Slugger" Invitational. Jenn Piazza, Jessica Braggins, and Amy Bellisari each drove in runs for FAU (0-2).
Auburn (1-1) took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third before FAU finally broke through. Piazza drove in Michelle Shirah with a one-out groundout. Auburn increased its lead to 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
That's when Pam Mazzarella started a rally with a lead-off single. Callie Piper followed with a one-out double. Braggins then scored Mazzarella with a sacrifice fly before Bellisari finished the FAU attack with an RBI-single that scored Piper.
Amanda Morin (0-1) made her freshman debut for the Lady Owls and threw a complete game. She allowed five runs on 11 hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Earlier in the day, FAU was defeated, 2-0, by no. 2 Arizona.
Florida Atlantic continues play Saturday with games against Sam Houston State and Northwestern at 3pm and 7pm, respectively.
