Chan Walker Chosen to Attend NCAA Women Coaches Academy

Four Day Event Focuses on Skill Building, Philosophy Development

Chan Walker came to Florida Atlantic as a student athlete. She has been an instrumental part of building the softball program and has been instrumental throughout the athletic department. Her versatility and willingness to help anyone who asks is a true asset to Coach Joyce and to any student athlete who has the pleasure of working with her.

The 2000 season marks her fourth as an assistant coach, for the university where she graduated. She dropped her student-assistant title upon graduation from FAU in December 1997, but quickly assumed the role of an assistant coach a role which has assumed more and more responsibility each season. She will continue to work with the hitters in 2001 as well as handle the responsibility of the equipment, travel and administrative tasks.

She has also served as assistant TAAC Tournament Director, in 1998 and 2000 and will have a similar role in 2001. Walker has also served as an assistant SID and is a constant contributor to game-day operations.

During her first season as a student-coach Walker worked with the players as a hitting instructor, base coach and travel coordinator of the Lady Owls softball team. She brings to the program an awareness of the fielding techniques needed to be a successful Division I softball outfielder.

As an outfielder for the Lady Owls for two seasons Walker maintained a good eye for the ball and great fielding touch. She hit her first Division I homer against St. John's University on February 22, 1995. In her first 11 games she reached base safely in 10 of those games. She scored seven runs in that same time span. She was third on the team with a .302 average last season. More important to the team was her team-leading on-base percentage. Contributing to the on-base percentage was her 20 walks. She fielded her position well with a fielding percentage of .900%. Among the 1996 starters she was third on the team with the fewest errors.

Walker came to Florida Atlantic after transferring from Spartanburg Methodist College Junior College where she played for Coach Vicki Corn.
