BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University sophomore women’s soccer defender Alex Maxson, who started all 21 matches for the squad in 2017 while earning a 3.83 GPA with a double major, was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Second Team, presented by InTouch Credit Union and recently released by the league.
Maxson was one of seven Owls to appear in every match and one of only two to start all 21, anchoring one of the centerback positions for the stingy FAU defense. At 1,662 minutes, she ranked third among all field players and played the entirety of nine matches, including five of the team’s eight shutouts this year. She also had the game-winning goal, the first of her young career, in a key conference victory versus UTEP. The Naples, Florida native’s 3.834 GPA was earned while majoring in both finance and international business.
“It’s truly an honor to be recognized for my efforts on and off the field,” said Maxson. “I would like to thank my teammates, coaches, support staff and professors for helping make my success as an FAU student-athlete possible.”
“We are excited to see Alex recognized for her academic accomplishments this past year,” said Head Coach Patrick Baker. “Most of our fans know Alex through her soccer accomplishments and never really hear of her quality school work. She works hard in the classroom, like a majority of our young ladies, and has found a good balance of academics and athletics at Florida Atlantic University. I am very thankful that Alex chose FAU in the recruiting process and she has become a key piece in our starting lineup. She continues to excel in the classroom, on the soccer field and is a tremendous young leader for our team. The All-Academic Team award is a great honor and we are excited to have Alex recognized by Conference USA.”
Maxson will return for her junior season in 2018 following the completion of the team’s run in this past week’s Conference USA Tournament.
