BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University defensive back D’Joun Smith and goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch were instrumental in victories against Conference USA opponents over the weekend earning the pair student-athlete of the week honors.
Football earned its first home win of the season 34-17 over Tulane University on Saturday, Nov. 2 while women’s soccer shutout UAB 2-0 to finish its season.
Smith collected three interceptions and a pass break-up, along with two tackle assists on Saturday. All three interceptions were recorded in the second half. Smith is now the nation's leader for interceptions and No. 2 nationally in passes defended with 17. He is the third FAU player to have three interceptions in a single game and the ninth in the history of C-USA. The junior has also been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week and the College Football Performance Wards-Week 10 National DB of the Week.
Zwetsch also earned conference honors this week as one of two women’s soccer players named to the Conference USA All-Academic Second Team. The goalkeeper has earned a 3.78 GPA in her four years at FAU and has been named to the student-athlete honor roll every semester. The award was announced just days after the senior recorded her sixth shutout of the season, the tenth of her career. Making Thursday’s match a senior night to remember, she made three saves against the high-powered Blazers offense. The Tampa native finished her career with 12 wins and 182 saves.
The Owls’ next football game is on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Southern Miss with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Women’s soccer concluded their season posting a 5-10-4 record overall and 3-3-4 in conference play.
