BOCA RATON, Fla. - On the heels of three straight wins - all shutouts - to cap the regular season, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team looks to defend their home turf on Wednesday night in the fourth and final quarterfinal match on the opening day of the 2017 Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship, opposite UAB at FAU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
Owls' Week in Review
The third consecutive clean sheet for the Owls (10-7-2, 5-4-1 C-USA), this a 1-0 decision over FIU, gave them their third straight season with double-digit victories. The win, and UAB's Sunday victory over WKU, clinched the No. 6 seed for the Owls and No. 3 for the Blazers (13-3-3, 7-2-1 C-USA).
Owls' Week in Preview
FAU and UAB met this year, a month to the day, on Oct. 1 in Boca Raton. The Owls drew first blood on Elisha Holmes' goal in the 24th, UAB's Amy Brewer equalized in the 60th, and neither could get the game-winner for the nearly 30 minutes left in regulation or either 10-minute overtime period.
That draw kept FAU unbeaten against the Blazers, now in six matches (4-0-2) all-time. The other three results in Boca Raton have all been Owl wins: 4-3 in 2012, 2-0 in 2013 and 4-0 in 2015.
Whichever team advances will know their opponent ahead of time, as the previous quarterfinal result and this will set up the bottom half of the bracket and the semifinal round. The third match on Wednesday pits No. 2-seeded North Texas (12-3-3, 7-1-2 C-USA) and No. 7 Middle Tennessee (8-9-0, 5-5-0 C-USA), at 4:30 p.m. The winners of each will meet at 1:30 p.m. Friday, and the championship is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday.
