Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team looks to build momentum for the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Championship by hosting South Florida rival FIU in the regular-season finale on Thursday, October 25, at 7 p.m. from the FAU Soccer Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
The Owls currently stand in eighth place in the SBC with a 3-6 record (worth nine points). The team is one point behind seventh place Troy University and two points shy of the University of South Alabama for sixth place.
FAU can secure the tournament’s No. 7 seed with a victory over FIU on Thursday as Troy and South Alabama square off against each other on Friday, October 26.
Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie continues to pace the FAU offensive attack with 10 goals – the second most scored among SBC players this season. Her 10 goals rank seventh most in a season in program history. Emslie also ranks second in the league in points per match (1.47), second in shots per match (4.13), third in shots (62) and fourth in points (22).
The Owls matched a season high effort with four goals in a 5-4 loss at Arkansas State University on Saturday, October 20. Freshman forward Natalia Hernandez and junior midfielder Ellie Smith scored their third goals of the season. Sophomore midfielder Nina Mas scored her first goal and added an assist, while sophomore defender Amunique Scott also tallied her first career goal.
FIU stands in third place in the SBC with a 7-1-1 record (22 points), and could capture the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament. The Panthers have a 10-5-2 overall record. Scarlett Montoya leads the team with nine goals, while Chelsea Leiva has added eight goals and five assists.
