Boca Raton, FL - A shutout and a record-setting performance has earned Florida Atlantic University senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week Award, the league office announced on Tuesday, October 16. She is the second Owls’ player to be recognized this fall.
Lantes, a native of Clermont, Fla., broke the school record for career saves while stopping six shots in a thrilling 2-1 overtime Senior Day victory over the University of Louisiana on Sunday, October 14. She broke Molly Keating’s record of 321 saves from 2000-03.
"Ashley had a solid weekend as she led the team to two victories," said Brian Dooley, FAU's head women's soccer coach. "The save record is also a true accomplishment. It recognizes performance over time and supporting her team. I'm glad it came during a win because she would trade any award for a win."
The senior helped lead FAU to a pair of home victories and move into sixth place in the conference standings – enhancing the team’s hopes for playing in the SBC’s post-season tournament. Lantes led a defensive effort that recorded a 1-0 shutout victory over the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, October 12, marking her second shutout of the season. Both shutouts have come in league matches.
On the season, Lantes has tallied 80 saves and has allowed an average of 1.06 goals in seven league action.
FAU stands 5-9 overall and is 3-4 in conference play. The team will look to lock up one of the eight berths to the conference tournament this weekend with road matches against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday, October 18, at 8 p.m. and Arkansas State University on Saturday, October 20, at 2 p.m.
