Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie was named the Sun Belt Conference's Offensive Player of the Week
Boca Raton, FL - Another Florida Atlantic University athletic team will be traveling to Alabama this weekend as the women's soccer team kicks off Sun Belt Conference action with matches at Troy University and University of South Alabama.
The Owls have a 2-5 record this season after a 4-3 win over UAB on September 16. The team has scored six goals in the last two matches.
"The offense is starting to come together. This should give us confidence going forward in the season," said Head Women's Soccer Coach Brian Dooley.
Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie leads FAU with four goals and 10 points. Three of those goals came in the UAB match - a performance that earned her the SBC's Offensive Player of the Week Award.
Other goal scorers for the team this season have been freshman forward Taylor Sorrels, with two goals, and single-goal efforts from junior midfielders Marisa Russo and Ellie Smith and freshman defender Dani Dangremond.
Junior forward Brittney Nash has helped set up those goals with three assists this fall.
Troy has a 5-4-1 record and has been outscored 8-1 in consecutive losses to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and Mercer University. Cecilia Thorngren anchors the offense with four goals and five assists, while Chelsey Williams has also scored four goals. The Owls defeated Troy 2-1 in overtime last season in Boca Raton.
South Alabama also enters the weekend at 5-4-1 after splitting a pair of 1-0 decisions last weekend. The Jaguars defeated Austin Peay University before falling to Murray State University. Kristyn Thacker leads the team with four goals. The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw last year in South Florida.
Friday's match at Troy is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., while the contest at South Alabama on Sunday starts at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out: Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie tallied the first hat trick in seven seasons in a 4-3 home win over UAB on September 16. She capped off her hat trick with the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining the match. Emslie scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute and scored her second goal of the match just before halftime. Freshman defender Dani Dangremond scored her first career goal on a shot from midfield that gave FAU a 3-0 advantage in the 60th minute.
