Boca Raton, FL - Tallying Florida Atlantic University's first hat trick in seven seasons has garnered freshman midfielder Claire Emslie the Sun Belt Conference's Offensive Player of the Week honors. This is the first recognition of the season for a member of the Owls' women's soccer team.
Emslie tallied a pair of goals in the first and added the game-winning goal in the final minutes of FAU's 4-3 win over UAB on September 16.
In the closing minutes of the match, the Scotland native went into the Blazers' six-yard box in anticipation of receiving a right crossing pass from junior forward Brittney Nash. Emslie then headed the ball to the lower right corner of the net to break the 3-3 tie and give the Owls the home victory.
Emslie also successfully executed a penalty kick in the 21st minute and scored on a shot from 10 yards out in the 41st minute. She had a game-high seven shots, with four shots being on goal in the final tune up before starting SBC play.
"Claire has always been around the goal this season," said Brian Dooley, FAU's women's soccer coach. "She was able to finish on some of her scoring chances. She has been working hard and this honor is certainly well deserved."
The hat trick was the first three-goal effort for FAU since Tessa McGarrity accomplished the feat in 2006 against Troy University.
The Owls, 2-5 on the season, begin conference action this weekend with road matches at Troy University on Friday, September 21, at 4 p.m. and the University of South Alabama on Sunday, September 23, at 2 p.m.
