Women's Soccer Hits Road for First Time in 2017
Aug. 31, 2017

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will put a three-match winning streak on the line this weekend, taking part in two tilts as part of a tournament held at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers.

Similar to last weekend, when the Owls (3-1) took two victories in a showcase on their home pitch and FGCU did the same in the "neutral" matches, the teams will swap duties, with the Eagles hosting four contests on the Gulf Coast. FAU will battle Liberty (0-2-2) on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and Kent State (1-2) Sunday morning for a 10:30 a.m. first kick. FGCU will follow with the opposite opponent each day.

Owls' Week in Review

The Owls' two wins in the inaugural FAU Adidas Owl Classic came at the expense of Eastern Michigan, by a 3-0 score, and a 1-0 victory against Valparaiso. In their last three matches, FAU has outscored their opponents 7-1, and with consecutive shutouts over the weekend, two defensive stalwarts earned Conference USA honors: Jennifer Ocampo as Goalkeeper of the Week, and Defensive Player of the Week Ebba Blomqvist. Blomqvist also leads the team in scoring with two goals. Five other Owls have a goal apiece, while two of those (Miracle Porter and Pernille Velta), along with two others, have recorded an assist.

Owls' Week in Preview

The Owls' first matchup is against Liberty, who has gone tie-loss, tie-loss in their first four matchups. Last time out, the Flames traveled to take on then-No. 10 Virginia and fell, 2-0. Gabrielle Farrell and Devon Jones have the team's two goals on the year, and Tori Collar has played every minute in goal, allowing six scores. The squad was picked first in the Big South Preseason Poll (receiving eight of 10 first-place votes), and senior forward Jennifer Knoebel was voted Preseason Attacking Player of the Year. They are back-to-back Big South Tournament champions, and as such, have made it to the NCAA Tournament these past two years.

On Sunday morning, FAU will take on Kent State, who picked up their first win of 2017 this past Sunday, 4-0 over St. Bonaventure. Cameron Shedenhelm had two goals that day and is tied for the team lead with Vital Kats, and the squad has had two goalkeepers split equal duty so far: Ashleah McDonald, who started the opener and played the first half in match two, and Katie Kingsbury, who wrapped the second match and earned the start and shutout win over the Bonnies. The Golden Flashes were voted preseason Mid-American Conference East Division favorites after a historic season a year ago when they went 15-3-2, won their first-ever MAC Tournament title, and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament in school history.

Here is the full schedule of the FGCU Tournament:
