Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University’s women’s soccer team interacted with local soccer fans during its gold medal watch party at Duffy's Sports Grill in Deerfield Beach on August 9. The US team captured the gold medal, defeating Japan 2-1.
The party gave local fans the opportunity to meet FAU’s 2012 team and coaches. This year’s team includes area players Lauren Berlingo and Natalia Hernandez (Wellington), Amunique Scott (Fort Lauderdale), Gabriella Sosa (Pembroke Pines), Haleigh Stremanos (Plantation) and Manon Transleau (Delray Beach).
"This event exceeded expectations with many club and youth teams attending the event," said Brian Dooley, FAU's head women's soccer coach. "Everyone had an enjoyable time. It was an exciting game. The team remembered many players that played with the magicJack last summer so having that connection made it more memborable."
The women’s soccer program has a unique connection to this summer’s tournament as 26 Olympians, and the entire U.S. team, played at the FAU Soccer Stadium last year when FAU hosted matches for the magicJack team of the Women’s Professional Soccer League.
Head Coach Brian Dooley and Assistant Coach Staci Wilson, a former U.S. Olympic gold medalist, offered insight prior to the start of the tournament. To read their responses to a few questions about the U.S. team, click here.
Duffy’s is a proud FAU athletic department sponsor.
The Owls are scheduled to open the fall season with a home match against in-state opponent Jacksonville University on Friday, August 17, at 7 p.m. at the FAU Stadium.
