BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's women's soccer team tied the match with three minutes remaining but Central Florida won 3-0 in penalty kicks to win the 2003 Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Championship. The Lady Owls hit three posts in the shootout and the Golden Knights knocked in three past Molly Keating to advance to their second straight NCAA Tournament. Lauren Lucena scored her sixth goal of the season while Kelly Hoffmann scored her first goal. Jennifer Montgomery scored her ninth goal of the year and Rachel Overstreet scored her second.
"This was a difficult thing for me because that [senior class] was my first recruiting class that has been through all of this," said FAU head coach Brian Dooley. "I give UCF credit for the win but I think our girls showed that they belong and they gave an absolutely an incredible effort."
"That was the most fatiguing game I have ever been apart of," said UCF head coach Amanda Cromwell. "It was a great game in which both of us battled hard. They got up one, we came back, and then took the lead and we thought we had it until three minutes left in the game. It was a game that could have gone either way."
With UCF leading 2-1 in the 87th minute, Kelly Hoffmann brought life back to FAU. Denise Brolly's cross from the left corner soared into the UCF box where the Golden Knights attempted to clear the ball. But Hoffmann stole the ball and shot it into the right corner of the net to tie the game 2-2.
FAU (16-4-1) got on the scoreboard first when Danielle Castro sent a free kick from midfield into the UCF (16-4-1) box. Lucena timed her jump perfectly and headed in the ball past Golden Knights keeper Julie Snaman to give the Lady Owls a 1-0 lead.
UCF responded immediately as the FAU defense failed to clear the ball from its box. Montgomery ran through the defense and kicked the ball past Keating for the equalizer.
The Golden Knights broke a 1-1 tie in the 75th minute when Overstreet picked up a rebound off of a Keating save and connected for her scored her second goal of the year.
Keating made six saves while Snaman grabbed three. UCF outshot FAU 14-12 and won the corner battle 6-2. This is the second time UCF has defeated FAU in the A-Sun finals, the last coming in 2001 with Central Florida winning 2-1.
